Cider and Six Nations – the perfect combination?

We’ve just taken another delivery from Rob at the Bottle Kicking Cider Company in Hallaton, Leicestershire. So alongside our old favourite Scrummage, we now offer the lighter (4.5% ABV) Full Back, as well as the traditional dry Spalding Scrumpy from Trev Churchill at Churchill Ciders in Lincolnshire, and the slightly sweeter Hibernate and Nice Pear (featuring a blend of apple and pear ciders) from Scrumpy Wasp in Nottinghamshire.

As if that wasn’t enough, we have bottled ciders galore.

Give the gift of Geese (and Fountain)

We’ve been asked a few times recently whether we can provide gift vouchers for people wanting to treat friends or family to a meal. You can now give a gift of a ‘Geese and Fountain’ voucher, for either meals or drinks (or both) up to whatever value you desire.

So if you know someone who loves great food, interesting beer or delicious organic wine, pop in to the pub to pick up a gift voucher and allow them to indulge themselves. There are no additional charges, you just pay the face value of the voucher, and the recipient can choose what to spend it on, with no limitations. And if they want to splash out a little more extravagantly, it’s no problem to just top up the value of the voucher with cash or a card payment.

Take home beer

The Geese and Fountain now offer “take home beer”on all our real ales. And it will save you money!

Simply buy one of our reusable glass “growlers” (German beer engineering at is absolute best, much better for the beer – and the environment – than cardboard cartoons or plastic bottles) for £8.

Fill it with your choice of real ale at the bargain price of £5 for a litre of beer, approximately 2 pints. That’s a saving of around 80p per pint. After you’ve used it five times, the growler has paid for itself, and after that you’re saving money every time you take beer home.

Because of the airtight seal, the beer will keep well for a few days (if you can resist the temptation to just drink it when you get home).

Are you looking for the perfect Valentine’s weekend treat?

How about a delicious meal for two, bed and breakfast with free prosecco on arrival and home-made chocolates at bedtime? We’ll have a fantastic ‘sharing menu’ with lots of items for two to share, and two of our very special individual bottles of organic Giol prosecco to welcome you on arrival – with our compliments. A riotous evening of country, bluegrass, Americana and so on, with a distinctive Leicestershire flavour. It’s going to be lots of fun. Don’t miss it.

Monday, February 1st 6pm
BEER SALE! A one-night-only discount night, with all hand pulled real ales just £2 a pint. Help us finish off all the beer ahead of our week of being closed.

Also – QUIZ NIGHT. Register teams from 7.30pm with questions starting at 8.

Don’t forget mondays are PIZZA MONDAYS! All day on Mondays from midday until 9pm we will have the pizza ovens on and a choice of toppings for you to design your own pizza. Cheese and tomato is £9.50, while unlimited toppings can be yours for just £10.50.

February 2nd – 9th: WE WILL BE CLOSED FOR A WEEK FOR MINOR REFURBISHMENTS, and a short holiday.

Cycling friendly Bed and Breakfast accomodation

If you’re planning a visit to the Vale of Belvoir, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire or Rutland to ride your bike (and if you’re not, you really should be), then we’d love you to stay with us while you visit. Whether you just want one night’s Bed and Breakfast while you tour your way up or down the eastern counties, or a base for a few days to properly explore the area, we think we have the perfect location for you.

Our pub is always cycling friendly. We have capacity for sixteen bikes to be locked to our bike racks under cover and behind a locked garage door. We make excellent coffee, and we don’t mind filling bidons with water while you refuel. We have free wifi so you can upload your Strava segments at the same time.

Things that are important to us, part two: the environment

These days everyone claims to be green. Every new business says it is environmentally friendly, and every old business re-designs its logo (hello, BP) to make it look like it cares about the planet without actually having to change any of its harmful practices.

We’re different. We’re determined to do as much as we possibly can to minimise the harmful impact of our business on the planet – both because we love the local environment and we want it to be beautiful for our visitors, and because we want our children, our grandchildren and our great-grandchildren to enjoy the benefits of living on a planet of such varied – but not limitless – resources.

Things that are important to us, part one: Beer!

Back when we opened the Geese and Fountain, we posted a seried of things on facebook about the kind of pub we want the Geese and Fountain to become. We thought the best place to start was with the beer…

We love beer, its traditions, its variety, its natural ingredients and magical brewing process. We love the look of a pint, the smell of a brewery and the taste of a well-kept glass of beer after a hard day’s work. We love light ales, golden ales, ruby ales and dark ales. We love stouts, porters, bitters, IPAs, APAs, milds, wheat beers, saisons, lambics, lagers, pilsners and brown ales. We especially love black IPAs at the moment, but that will probably change at some point.

Beer is, as most people know, a happy accident, discovered by chance and wild fermentation – the precise origins lost in ancient history. At times considered a magical or holy process, brewing turns the most simple of natural ingredients – water, malted barley, hops and yeast – into the headiest mixture of often pure crystal clarity and delightful taste.

What’s on at The Geese in January?

Events this month at the Geese and Fountain…

Sunday 10th
Geese Folk – acoustic night. Bring an instrument, your voice, or just your ears. Whether you want to join in or not, Geese Folk is a welcoming and inclusive acoustic night for performers of folk, blues, roots, country, Americana, or pretty much any other style you might have in mind. Music gets underway about 8pm.

Monday 11th
Pizza Monday – pizzas all day from 12 until 9.

Monday 18th
Games Night. Bring your own, or play one of ours. Pizza Monday – pizzas all day from 12 until 9.

Friday 22nd
Darts – HOME. Come and cheer on the team in their Belvoir League game.

Sunday 24th
LIVE MUSIC: When Cousins Marry. Playing a unique Leicestershire take on bluegrass, country and Americana, the Cousins are a rare breed. That’s probably for the best, but they do know how to have a good time. Come down and join in!
